Geographical Location
The town after which we are named “ZONKWA”, is the headquarters of Zangon-Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The geographical coordinates of this town that sits the Cathedral of the Diocese are 9° 47' 0 North, 8° 17' 0" East. However, the diocese also covers most parts of both Kachia and Lere Local Government Areas.
These three Local Government Areas are situated by and large in the Southern part of Kaduna State, located at the centre of Northern Nigeria. Agriculture is the main stay of the economy of the people here, with about 80% of the people actively engaged in farming and the state has the political significance of being the former administrative headquarters of Northern Nigeria during the colonial era.
Ecclesiastical Location
The Diocese of Zonkwa is situated in the Ecclsiatical Province of Abuja. It was carved out of Kafanchan Diocese on the 17th day of September, in the year of our Lord, 2004 and inaugurated on the 19th of March, in the following year. The Rt. Rev. Duke Akamisoko was elected and consecrated as the first Bishop. The charge from the Primate of All Nigeria, who also is the Archbishop of the Province the new Diocese is situated in, at the creation, was very emphatic. The goal is Mission! Mission!! Mission!!!
Block Statistics
The fruitful labours of the former Bishop of Zonkwa, in compliance with the Primate’s charge has resulted in the existence today, of fifteen (15) deaneries, eighty- one (81) local congregations and twelve (12) outreach stations (communities where work is on going with the intention of church planting).
Work Force
The eighty-one (81) congregations are manned by forty-three (43) pastors. Thirty-one (31) of whom are ordained and the remaining are catechists who serve as rural evangelist. By simple arithmetic, it means we have thirty-eight (38) churches without pastors. The situation here, shows what we see in many different parts of our Church, a case of the harvest being very plentiful and the laborers being few. Please pray that the Lord of the harvest will send faithful and committed laborers into these fields.
